Backstage with Blake Shelton

If you didn't get to see Blake Shelton Saturday night at the Pensacola Civic Center, I regret to inform you that you missed one AWESOME concert.  I'm not saying that because it was just the other night and I'm still caught up in the moment.  No, it really was a great show and thanks to Blake's record label rep Lou Ramirez, my wife Kim & I got to experience Blake Shelton's "Beer Camp" before the show, which made it even more fun.  One of the perks of working in radio is that you get to attend a lot of the concerts that come to town and even meet the singers every now & then.  After working in radio for 15+ years, I sometimes have to remind myself that not everyone gets to see these shows and meet these singers.  So I'd like to give you full disclosure (well, almost full disclosure) on what it's like to go backstage for a big concert.

The middle of last week, Lynn came in the studio when I was on the air and asked if Kim & I would be interested in going to "Beer Camp" before the show.  I gave her a quick "yes" and then we both wondered what exactly would take place at this Beer Camp.  Knowing Blake's personality and the fact that there would quite obviously be alcohol involved, we came to the conclusion that we didn't know, but whatever it was, it would probably be a lot of fun.  Most of the time when you get to go backstage to meet an artist, you're in a line of people and when you get to the front of the line, you have enough time to say "hello", get an autograph & a picture and you're out the door.  Beer Camp sounded like it might be a little different, so we were pretty excited to see what it was all about.  Saturday night, Kim & I got to the Civic Center around 5:45 and hung out at the WXBM tent until Lou came out at 6 and we headed in along with another radio personality from Mobile.  While we were walking, he mentioned that he got a phone call from a guy with the Toronto Blue Jays baseball team wanting to know if he could get tickets & backstage passes for one of the players and his buddies who were in town and wanting to see the show.  I'm a huge baseball nerd, so I had to ask which player, and he said it was Colby Rasmus.  I'd heard of him and was excited that there was a chance that I was going to meet a professional baseball player as well as Blake.  So anyway, Lou brings us inside before the doors open and we walked up to the left side of the stage, and then through security, down a hall and around the corner and he said "Welcome to 'Beer Camp'".  We walked in to a room with a big "Blake Shelton" rug on the floor, a nice couch, food, soft drinks, beer, booze, a lamp made out of a deer antler and wall coverings that made you feel like you were in a huntin' camp.  There was also a big screen HDTV with full karaoke set up and XBOX.  The four of us settled in and chatted for a while as different crew members and band members filtered in & out.  Most would just pop in to say hi to Lou and grab something to drink, and then they were back out the door.  At about 6:30, Blake's steel guitar/lead guitar player, Kevin, came in with his parents who were in town from San Antonio and hung out for about 45 minutes.  After a short time, Kevin couldn't resist the karaoke any longer, so he punched up some "Fightin' Side" from Merle, and then "1982" from Randy Travis.  The karaoke machine was on shuffle, and it was playing some pretty random stuff, and out of nowhere, Michael Jackson's "Beat It" came on and again, Kevin couldn't resist singing....or "vocal stylings" as he put it.  Kevin's version of Beat It was a little different than the MJ version, and right in the middle of the song, Blake popped in the room, saw what was going.  He laughed, shook his head, said "good GOD" and then apologized to everyone in the room for what was going on & turned around and walked out.  We all had a good laugh over that, and it brought Beat It to an abrupt end because of the laughter.  Shortly after that, the baseball guys showed up.  It was Colby Rasmus, Trent Mummey who plays ball in the Orioles farm system and four other guys who play (or played) for Auburn.  Super nice guys.  A few minutes after they got there, Blake came back in and chatted with everyone for about 15 minutes, until he had to head out to get ready for the show.  Blake is very candid.  He is who he is, whether he's on stage, in front of a camera or hanging out in Beer Camp.  We had a lot of laughs as he told us a few hunting stories, few stories from his experiences on The Voice and he said he is really excited to be performing with Miranda before the Super Bowl.  Beer Camp was awesome.  It wasn't the raucous party that we thought it would be, but that was perfectly fine with us.  After a few pics with Blake and Colby, Lou brought us to the soundboard on the floor of the Civic Center where we saw Justin Moore's set and then he brought us up to the front row to see Blake's entire performance!  We didn't expect to go all the way up to the front, but it sure was fun.  There aren't many singer in any genre that sound as good in concert as they do on CD, but Blake does.  A great voice and a true entertainer.  It was an awesome night!  Thanks Lynn, Lou & Blake!

As I mentioned, Blake and Miranda will be performing before the Super Bowl this Sunday.  They will perform "America The Beautiful" right before Kelly Clarkson sings the "Star Spangled Banner".  Blake also returns to NBC's "The Voice" this year and the season premiere is right after the Super Bowl.  I missed it last year, but will definitely watch this time around.

Have a great week and thanks for listening to Your Country 102.7 WXBM!

Lee Brice's fire scare and more FREE Blake tix!!

Lee Brice had a scare this week when his tour bus caught fire! Lee and his band & crew had just arrived in Mesa, AZ for a show at Toby Keith's I Love This Bar & Grill when the fire started. Lee said he was asleep in the back lounge when he was alerted and he & the band made it off the bus before it got out of hand.

Glad nobody was injured! Sure could have been a lot worse.

Carrie Underwood and Steven Tyler will join forces for an upcoming edition of CMT's Crossroads! The two performed together a few times last year and will be on Crossroads on February 4th on CMT. FREE Blake Shelton tickets

Man down!! Just a few days after Jake Owen had his wisdom teeth pulled, he took a nasty spill and broke his collar bone snowboarding in Colorado! He will have to re-schedule a couple show as he is set to undergo surgery tomorrow (1/17) to help it heal correctly. Jake told his fans about the incident on twitter last Friday and tweeted today that his doctor said Jake's injury is worse than some football injuries he has seen! Ouch!!

Trace Adkins' latest movie role is in a western called "Wyatt Earp's Revenge". The film also stars Val Kilmer and Diana DeGarmo, and based on the murder of Wyatt's first love, Dora. Trace says recording and touring is still his main priority, and even though he enjoys acting it's a hobby, not a full time gig. Look for Wyatt Earp's Revenge on DVD March 6th.

We're getting closer to finding out who will be playing in the Super Bowl this year! We know for sure that Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert will be there. They'll be singing "America The Beautiful" just before Kelly Clarkson sings the National Anthem before kickoff in Indy, February 5th. Oh yeah, Madonna will perform at halftime. So much for cleaning up the halftime show. Speaking of Blake, how would you like to win FREE tickets to his "Well Lit and Amplified" concert, January 28th at the Pensacola Civic Center!!! Listen to Marty & Lindsey Marie weekday's between 6-10am and when they play any two Blake songs back-to-back, be the 25th caller to win two FREE TICKETS!! Wedding bells for Lady A and Miranda Lambert on the small screen

Lady Antebellum's Hillary Scott is officially a married woman!  She and Chris Tyrell tied the knot this past Saturday in upstate New York with close family & friends in attendance.  They announced their wedding with this photo:

and this video:

Hillary and Chris met on tour in 2010 when Lady Antebellum and Love & Theft (Chris is L&T's drummer) were opening acts on im McGraw's "Southern Voice" tour.  Chris proposed over the 4th of July weekend in 2011, and they were married Saturday, January 8th 2012.  Congrats!!!

Miranda Lambert will be on an upcoming episode of NBC's "Law & Order:  SVU".  She recently broke the news that she will take on the role of an actress who accuses a reality TV producer of assault.  No word on when she will film the episode or when it will air.  I'll keep yo posted.  Miranda also announced last week that she will help her husband Blake Shelton on "The Voice" this year.  The '12 season of The Voice will be February 5th on NBC.

Later this month Eric Church and Brantley Gilbert will head out on the "Blood, Sweat & Beers" tour, and they'll make a stop at the Wharf in Orange Beach on Saturday, March 12th!!!  I've always been a huge fan of Eric, and I've only seen him in concert one time when he opened up for Dierks Bentley back in.....2006?  He was only on stage for about 30 minutes, so I'm pretty excited to see his full show.  Tickets are on sale at all Ticketmaster outlets and the Wharf box office.  Check out Eric singing "Springsteen":

Tim, Dierks & Barnum Bash

Happy New Year!!  Is your new year's resolution still in tact?  The only time I ever made a resolution and stuck to it was going into Y2K when I quit dipping.  It was the hardest thing I've ever done but I'm glad I did because it's a terrible habit.  Plus, I was in the gas station today I looked over and noticed that my old brand of dip is over $6 a can!!  I went through two cans a week, so that's an extra $624 in my pocket every year.  Score!!!  My resolution this year is to quit biting my fingernails.  It's not quite as nasty as dipping, but it's still a bad habit.  Good luck with your resolution if you made one!

This week I've got a little info on upcoming CD's by Tim McGraw and Dierks Bentley.

Tim's project "Emotional Traffic" is finally going to see the light of day on January 24th.  It will feature 12 songs, including a song with hip-hop star Ne-Yo (never heard of him), his hit song "Felt Good On My Lips" and his current single "Better Than I Used To Be".  Here's the complete track list:

1. Halo
2. Right Back Actha Babe
3. One Part, Two Part
4. I Will Not Fall Down
5. The One
6. Better Than I Used To Be
7. Touchdown Jesus
8. The One That Got Away
9. Felt Good On My Lips
10. Hey Now
11. Only Human (With Ne-Yo)
12. Die By My Own Hand

Dierks Bentley's "Home" has also been in the works for quite a while.  The lead single "Am I The Only One" was released in March of last year and at that time, the project was scheduled for an August release date.  Never heard what pushed it back but I really like both singles that have come from this CD so far.  Look for "Home" February 7th.

1. 'Am I the Only One'
2. 'Gonna Die Young
3. 'Tip it on Back'
4. 'Home'
5. 'Diamonds Make Babies'
6. 'In My Head'
7. 'Breathe You in'
8. 'The Woods'
9. 'When You Gonna Come Around'
10. '5-1-5-0'
11. 'Heart of a Lonely Girl'
12. 'Thinking of You'

Keep listening to 102.7 WXBM to win tickets to Barnum Bash!!  Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey will be bringing a great show to the Pensacola Civic Center, January 12th-15th.  They say Barnum Bash is the "SWAKIEST" (is that a real word??) circus party around!!  My favorite part of the circus will always be the Wheel of Steel.  I'd love to try it, but would never have the guts to get in there.....or the money to pay for my injuries.  The Wheel of Steel will be part of Barnum Bash as well as Dimitri the Strong Man, Motorcycle Mania, Hand Balancers and a TON more.  They are also throwing a big pre-show party for all ticket holders one hour before the show.  Tickets start at $17 (plus service charges) at the Pensacola Civic Center box office and ticketmaster.com, and be sure to keep listening to WXBM for details on how you can win FREE tickets!!  More Barnum Bash info here:  http://www.ringling.com/ContentPage.aspx?id=45479&section=45474
