TV news and Super Bowl thoughts
Looks like country singers will be all over the TV in the coming weeks & months. Miranda Lambert on Law & Order this week, Blake Shelton on the Voice, Dierks Bentley on Letterman & a new sitcom for Reba. I'll have full deatils in a sec.
First things first. Blake and Miranda were awesome together singing "America The Beautiful". Kelly Clarkson was just a good singing the Star Spangled Banner. Madonna was terrible at halftime. Who books halftime entertainment? Was Madonna really their best option? Didn't they vow to keep the halftime entertainment "clean" after the whole Janet Jackson (intentional) "wardrobe malfunction"? For the most part, Madonna, herself was OK, but one of her fellow performers flipped the middle finger to the camera during the performance. Who really thought Madonna or any of her cohorts could get through a performance without offending someone? Not me. I know the middle finger isn't exactly the same as Janet Jackson's bare boob, but kids watch these singers and like it or not, they look to them as role models. Call me old fashioned, but I wouldn't want my kids to see that. There hasn't been a true country halftime show at the Super Bowl since 1994 when Clint Black, Wynonna, Tanya Tucker and The Judds performed together. I know, Shania performed a few years back, but most would beg to differ that she is a country performer. What about Garth? The people who schedule SB halftime entertainment are (for the most part) not scheduling artists who are rising stars or are at the peak of their stardom, they're going after artists like Tom Petty, Rolling Stones, U2, Paul McCartney, Prince, Bruce Springsteen & The Who. Garth would be perfect for the Super Bowl. He has sold more albums than anyone on the planet and he is (in my opinion) the best stage performer of ANYONE out there. Anyone. Of course I don't know all the details. Maybe he was already booked in Vegas that weekend or they couldn't come to terms somehow. Or if they want someone relevant in today's music, what about Taylor Swift? I'm really not that upset with the whole thing, I'm just trying to figure it out. When they say they want to have a halftime show that is acceptable for all ages, and then they book Madonna, it makes me wonder. I'm sure, like anything else, money and profit take priority over anything else even if means having to see the occasional boob or middle finger. Who would you like to see perform at halftime of the Super Bowl?
Miranda Lambert will be featured on an episode of NBC's "Law & Order: SVU" this Wednesday, Feb. 8th. Miranda will portray a reality actress who accuses her producer of assault. It's a TV show and a role that hits home for her since both her parents worked as private investigators when she was going up and her father worked with victims of violent crimes. Look for Miranda's episode this Wednesday at 9pm on NBC. She will also be helping her husband, Blake Shelton as a coach on NBC's The Voice. I missed The Voice last year, but caught the premiere last night after the Super Bowl and really liked it. I'll definitely be watching every episode this year. If they could only find a "mute" button for Christina.
In other TV news, Reba is scheduled to film a sitcom pilot in April for a show called "Malibu Country". She will play the part of a woman from Nashville who discovers her rock-star husband has been cheating on her, so she packs up their kids and moves to Malibu to try to resurrect her own singing career. ABC has agreed to shoot the pilot episode in April with the hopes of getting it on air mid-summer. I'll keep you posted.
Couple other quick things: Dierks Bentley will be on Letterman tomorrow night, 10:35 on CBS. Dierks' new CD "Home" is out tomorrow. And Carrie Underwood announced that her new CD will be released May 1st. No title for that project yet, but she has stated that there will be some "darker" material on it. The first single "Good Girl" will not be one of those dark tunes, but it should be released later this month.
As always, have a great week! Thanks for checking out the News & Notes blog, and thanks for listening to Your Country 102.7 WXBM!
